Shafted – A Mexican Tale

Fate cannot be controlled and is frequently quite unpleasant. Yet, a bad hand that is dealt by fate can be the start to a new and better phase in life. It all depends on how it is played.

The protagonist, Rigoberto Pereira Cervantes ended up by chance in one of Mexico’s many illegal silver mines. While he recuperates from a near fatal accident he escaped, thanks to his foreman, Miguel Patín saving his life, he gets embroiled in an impromptu miners’ rebellion. Rigoberto is not a miner, does not consider himself to be one of “them” and wants to have nothing to do with their grievances. But the treatment of Miguel, accused and punished as the leader of the rebellion, is sufficient for him to recognise that he is one of “them”. He begins to explore the management’s dark schemes of manipulating and exploiting the workforce and discovers a fiendish control system of every movement of every person in the mine and the compound. He makes a move to stop the miners getting shafted, but his actions lead to utter chaos in the mine that coincide with a mine accident killing forty miners. Rigoberto and Miguel need to overcome many obstacles and setbacks to prepare the workforce for a final showdown.
